The newly released “State of Cancer Centers in 2025” report finds 62% of centers cite patient flow and scheduling as their top challenge — highlighting the need for smarter, tech-enabled solutions in oncology operations.
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — June 26, 2025 — LeanTaaS, Inc., the market leader in AI‑powered, cloud‑based capacity management, staffing, and patient‑flow software for healthcare, conducted a national survey of nearly 200 nursing and operational leaders from community hospitals, academic medical centers, and private oncology practices. The findings, published in the State of Cancer Centers in 2025 Report, reveal an industry under operational strain, but also one increasingly equipped with the insights, tools, and urgency to respond strategically.
Key findings from the survey include:
- 62% of centers identify managing patient flow and scheduling as their top operational challenge and 47% cite midday congestion as a key operational bottleneck.
- 54% of infusion leaders say that scheduling and capacity management are the areas most in need of AI or advanced analytics.
- Infusion centers are increasingly focused on growth, with 53% of centers reporting active expansion of their services, up from 47% in 2023.
- Far fewer respondents listed “hiring additional staff” as a key strategy for growth, down from 33% in 2023 to just 20% in 2025. Instead, 43% indicated plans to expand their physical space.
- 82% of centers struggle with access to actionable data, making informed decision-making a challenge.
- 19% of centers report staffing shortages, resulting in higher nurse-to-patient ratios and increased burnout.
“Infusion centers are essential to the cancer care journey, yet they continue to face mounting operational pressures that strain capacity and delay care. These findings highlight a critical inflection point: reactive scheduling and manual workarounds are falling short,” said Mohan Giridharadas, Founder and CEO at LeanTaaS. “Leaders are increasingly turning to AI, automation, and transformation services to unlock capacity and streamline workflows — signaling a pivotal shift toward scalable, patient-centered operations that ensure timely care during life’s most vulnerable moments.”
Infusion centers are under growing strain as they manage rising patient volumes driven by two major trends: the aging U.S. population, with adults 65 and older expected to nearly double by 2060, and increasing cancer incidence among younger adults. This surge is placing significant pressure on clinical staff, impacting resources, care timeliness, and workforce sustainability, signaling the need for AI-driven solutions, improved system integration, and a strategic approach to workforce and capacity management.
