Life at LeanTaaS: Spotlight on our Summer 2024 Interns

LeanTaaS proudly celebrates the achievements of our 2024 summer interns! This year, our Data Analyst interns were immersed in hands-on projects that not only honed their data analytics skills but also provided real-world impact within the healthcare industry. As the summer ended and they returned to school to continue their studies, we caught up with a few of the interns to reflect on their experiences, the lessons they learned, and their favorite memories.

Alli Borland

School: University of North Carolina at Charlotte
Site: Charlotte Office
Specialty: Data Analyst Intern, iQueue for Infusion Centers
Fun Fact: I went to Nationals in 8th grade for pole bending (a horse competition)

Internship Experience:
“I have a really good impression of LeanTaaS, specifically the internship program. I loved my mentors, bosses, coworkers—really anyone I talked to. The opportunity to meet with multiple stakeholders and lead meetings with the expectation that I’m the expert was an invaluable experience.

I was able to not only learn different data analysis techniques but also work on different types of projects. For instance, I worked with the CMO on a generative AI project. With that, I was able to get more hands-on experience with AI, come up with creative solutions to new problems, and get better at communicating technical information to new stakeholders.”

Favorite Memory:
“My favorite memory during this internship was a day when all the Charlotte interns were preparing for our presentation, but it got off track because there was a huge debate about ‘What is a boy band?’ and ‘What qualifies as a boy band?’ Everyone was getting involved, from our bosses to other higher-ups in the company. It was honestly a surreal experience and a memory I will look back on years from now.”

Audrey Luey

School: University of Washington
Site: Santa Clara Office
Specialty: Data Analyst Intern, iQueue for Infusion Centers
Fun Fact: I enjoy hiking with friends and family, most recently exploring Yosemite National Park

Internship Experience:
“Our managers did an amazing job structuring the program with clear expectations, responsibilities, and deadlines each day. My projects involved close collaboration with the Data Analyst, Data Engineering, and Customer Success teams, which helped me improve my cross-functional communication skills and challenged me to adapt quickly to the unique needs of my customers. The continuous support I received from those around me made my experience even more rewarding.

I also really appreciated the different professional development sessions that LeanTaaS hosted for us. I think they are unique opportunities that not all companies offer, and they give me a better sense of what I am looking for in my future career.”

Favorite Memory:
“One of my favorite memories was the opportunity to sit down with Mohan, the CEO, in a small environment. It was a few days into the first week of orientation, and he shared with us why our roles are important to the company, asked how we could be best supported, and provided organic insight into the company’s high-level mission. It was eye-opening to understand how our work would contribute to cutting-edge efforts in predictive analytics and AI, ultimately improving patient care and access.”

Marc Rosenthal

School: Bowdoin College
Site: Charlotte Office
Specialty: Data Analyst Intern, iQueue for Infusion Centers
Fun Fact: I’m a huge sports nerd, especially for soccer and basketball

Internship Experience:
“I was surprised by how approachable everyone was and how willing people were to meet all the interns, even those with no direct connection to the program. Everyone took a lot of time to talk to us, provide help, and offer to let us shadow them. I was kind of blown away by how gracious everyone was with sharing their experience with us.

At the beginning of this internship, I knew I wanted to do something with data, and that was a super open-ended thought. Then getting to LeanTaaS, I felt like I was aimed more at the healthcare field. A common goal of everyone is creating positive change in the healthcare industry, and we appreciate that the work we do directly affects patient outcomes as well as ease of use for nurses and medical staff.”

Favorite Memory:
“The most rewarding project I worked on was the unit hierarchy migration project. We were specifically working on the iQueue app, which I thought was amazing based on how the first half of the internship we were doing more technical coding. It was really cool to see how the coding we did was reflected within the physical app, and we were able to work on it in a way that showed us what the Production Implementation and Customer Success (PICS) team works with on a day-to-day, as well as our customers within their hospitals interacting with the app.”

Natalie Lubich

School: University of California, Santa Barbara
Site: Santa Clara Office
Specialty: Data Analyst Intern, iQueue for Infusion Centers
Fun Fact: I enjoy learning guitar, exploring nature, and making art

Internship Experience:
“We had the chance to not only interact with the data analysts, but also all the other teams. And not only the technical teams, you could interact with any team that you wanted. They were always happy to help even though they’re all very busy. The experience was a combination of both applying your skills but also learning about anything that interests you. This is very important in an internship.

Personally, I feel like I’m still early in my career to even have a set goal, but whatever career goals that I’ve had or ideas that I would have wanted to pursue were actually confirmed by this internship, in the sense that I don’t know specifically about healthcare, but I always wanted to do something with data that had a direct impact on people. And so, this was a great experience to do just that.”

Favorite Memory:
“I really enjoyed being in the office with all the other interns. Of course, it would have been even better if we were able to collaborate with the Charlotte interns in-person as well. Since everybody comes from different backgrounds and coding levels, it made the experience even more rewarding when we could help each other out with both the technical and non-technical tasks. Everyone’s friendly attitude kept the office environment fun and positive all summer long.”

Raine Jones

School: Davidson College
Site: Charlotte Office
Specialty: Data Analyst Intern, iQueue for Infusion Centers
Fun Fact: I have studied in Toulouse, France

Internship Experience:
“One thing that surprised me was how much collaboration the company has across different departments and also with its customers. LeanTaaS goes above and beyond to make sure that everything is coordinated and that each customer’s specific requests and needs are met. Also, people showed a lot of excitement to have all the interns in the office, whether it was on Zoom or in person, and not just the data analysts but people from all the other departments. We got to learn a lot that wasn’t just directly related to our work, which I thought was really cool.

I found the first project very valuable and rewarding. We were doing more code-based work, and it gave perspective to the code because it’s like, ‘Oh, you’re just doing code,’ but then we got to explain the code to the PICS team and understand how our work within code actually directly impacts the company. I found the collaborative aspect very, very valuable.”

Favorite Memory:
“There are so many favorite memories. I think an overall highlight was the first week in Santa Clara. That was just an incredible experience to get to fly out and meet all the other interns. It made talking to the other interns throughout the whole time much better because you really got to know everyone instead of only meeting over Zoom.”
