Problem

Novant Health wanted to meet substantial growth targets to scale their already large and diverse organization. Growth opportunities included attracting community surgeons within a competitive market, enabling new and existing surgeons to find open OR time, and streamlining the OR scheduling process to accommodate new surgeons within existing capacity.

As the COVID-19 pandemic began and advanced, Novant Health, like most hospitals across the US, faced a shortage of available operating room time, large elective surgery backlogs, and low block utilization. Recognizing a highly competitive market for surgeons and staff, system leadership needed a unified approach for making key decisions such as block time allocations, block release times, and streamlining operational improvements. Novant Health also needed a credible “single source of truth” across all facilities for greater visibility and transparency into key metrics system-wide.

Solution

To address urgent needs for greater accessibility to operating room time, as well as increased visibility and transparency into operating room utilization, Novant Health selected iQueue for Operating Rooms and proceeded to remotely implement the solution across its North Carolina facilities. iQueue would support increased surgeon engagement as well as the surgeon’s accountability for use of their allocated time, add transparency to data-driven decision-making, and build surgeons’ trust in the data. iQueue would support Novant Health’s desire to adopt a new, more surgeon-centric framework for measuring OR utilization.

During the initial partnership with LeanTaaS’ iQueue for Operating Rooms software and team, Novant Health realized a greater breadth of engagement from surgeons and their practice administrators, along with clear operational results.

Before the pandemic, we knew we had to solve our problem of surgical case backlog. Then COVID-19 hit and suddenly we had to postpone 8,000 surgical cases. We took this opportunity to invest in technology, partnering with LeanTaaS to help us improve our OR capacity and provide surgeons with a tool that made OR time simple to view, access, and share … [iQueue] proved vital in navigating the aftermath of the return of surgical cases.
